COVID-19 – ANNOUNCEMENT FROM BRIGHTLINGSEA REGATTA ASSOCIATION – 25 March 2020
It is with great sadness that we must announce that Brightlingsea Regatta 2020, due to be held on the weekend of 4 and 5 July, has been cancelled in response to the current COVID-19 crisis.
We do appreciate the important part the regatta plays in the social and commercial life of the town and the decision was not made lightly, but the current circumstances make both logistical and financial planning for this year’s event untenable. It was also strongly felt that the energies and skills of those involved in running the regatta could be better used elsewhere in the community at this most crucial time.
Whilst this year’s event will not be possible, we can confirm that the 2021 Brightlingsea Regatta will take place on the weekend of July 10 and 11.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful event sponsors, artists and stall holders who had already committed to supporting this year’s event, and to confirm that we very much hope to partner with them again in 2021. The Association Treasurer will contact those who had made payments for 2020 regarding refunds.
We would also like to thank the Brightlingsea Coastal Rowing Club, Brightlingsea Harbour, Brightlingsea Sailing Club, the Colne Yacht Club and the University Community Sailing Club who play such a vital role in running the regatta and without whose support the event would not be possible.
Brightlingsea Regatta Association Committee
Brightlingsea Regatta will take place on 10 and 11 July 2021 with events happening throughout the harbour and waterfront venues on both days and with a spectacular free Saturday night Firework Display, which will be visible from the Western Promenade, Brightlingsea Sailing Club, Waterside Marine viewing area, Point Clear, East Mersea and other harbour and estuary viewing points.
With a host of waterside and waterborne activities throughout both days there is plenty to entertain the entire family. Both Brightlingsea Sailing Club and the Colne Yacht Club will be offering opportunities to Try Sailing, with Brightlingsea Sailing Club also offering Try Powerboating sessions too, while Brightlingsea Coastal Rowing Club and the University Community Sailing Club will be offering the opportunity to Try Gig Rowing.
The spectacular St Helena Hospice Craft Your Raft Race will be held off the Western Promenade on Saturday, which will be open to teams from pubs, clubs, companies, organisations and groups of friends from throughout the region.
The Town Jetty will also be hosting a variety of other interesting vessels which the public can visit.
All of the clubs and the harbour area cafes and restaurants will be open to the public throughout the weekend, offering a wide range of food, drink and entertainment.
With stalls lining the streets and start of the promenade area, plus children’s entertainments at Brightlingsea Sailing Club, there truly is something for everyone.
